Campbeltown Brass

Katrina Barr   2nd Cornet

Katrina Barr started on the cornet in primary 5 and joined Campbeltown Brass at the age of 11. There, she became best friends with Ruth Evans and Morvern Gilchrist and between them formed a quartet which also included Ruth’s cousin Zoë Metcalf who played horn. They went on to win the Scottish Under 16 Quartet Championship 2 years running.

Katrina sat bumper-up solo cornet to Morvern Gilchrist for a number of years, then had a short time on Euphonium and up until recently, she had played Baritone. She decided to have a spell on tuba, but changed back onto cornet to strengthen up the back row in time for the 2006 Scottish Championships.

When Mr. Evans left Campbeltown Brass in May 2003, Katrina formed the Youth Band on a Tuesday night, so that the younger ones who had already started instruments wouldn’t be left without musical encouragement. This has proven to be a great success, with them achieving a runners up place at the Scottish Youth Championships in 2003 and winning the competition in 2004.

She also conducts the main Thursday night rehearsals for Campbeltown Brass, and is relieved when Craig Anderson can manage down to conduct, which allows her to join the band as a player once again!

In April 2005, Katrina joined the Young Ambassadors Brass Band of Great Britain and toured Luxembourg, she hopes to play with them again at some point in the future.

Katrina works with her husband running 2 Optometry practices in Campbeltown and Tarbert and they have a dog called George, who she says is much too clever for his own good! Katrina has her motorcycle license and currently has a Suzuki SV650 to run around on but doesn’t take it to band, as her Baritone wouldn’t fit on the back of it!
