Scottish
Champions!! 10/03/07
Campbeltown Brass were crowned Scottish
Champions at the weekend for the 1st time in their 24
year history, by winning the 3rd Section at the Scottish
Championships held in Dundee. They have also qualified
to represent Scotland at the National Finals in Harrogate later
in September and also have gained promotion into the 2nd Section
in November.
Scotland's youngest and furthest travelled
band were drawn 7th in the 3rd Section contest, featuring 12
bands playing Darrol Barry's set test piece, "Prelude
& Jubilate". The band played excellent and
everybody was extremely happy with their performance after
coming off the stage. Adjudicators Richard Evans and
Stephen Roberts placed the band ahead of contest
favourites Coalburn Band and other the qualifier for the British Finals, Perthshire
Brass, giving Campbeltown Brass their 1st Scottish
Championship win since they began in 1983. Commenting on
the performance Stephen Roberts said "the playing
was of Rolls Royce standard", and Richard Evans
commented that the band had "the extra sparkle"
at several moments in the piece, which set them ahead of
the rest of the competition.
With 20 out of the 28 players in the
contest band aged just 16 & under, and with 6 of
them playing their Scottish Championship contest for the
very 1st time, they were against some very older and more
experienced adult bands in the contest. All the preperation in
the last few weeks, led by conductor Craig Anderson has
certainly paid off, deserving them a very long and over-due win.

Celebrations in Dundee before heading home!!
Scottish Championships training weekend
Campbeltown Brass recently held a rehearsal weekend in
preparation for the forth-coming Scottish Championships in Dundee
this weekend. The band invited down Charlie Farren and Alison
Bonnar from the current Scottish Championship Section winners,
the Scottish Co-op Band, and also the legendary cornet player
and 7-times Scottish Solo Champion, Jim Smith, who is well
known in British banding.
Along with the band's Musical Director Craig Anderson, the
tutors spent all weekend taking sectional and full band
practices and also individual lessons, working on the set
test-piece "Prelude and Jubilate" by Darrol Barry, in
which Campbeltown Brass and 11 other bands will be playing in
the Scottish 3rd Section Contest this Saturday
(10th), in Dundee's Caird Hall. The Scottish Championships also
doubles as the Regional Qualifiers for the British Finals later
in the year, and also determines the promotion/relegation of
bands in each of the 5 sections in Scotland.
Pancake Afternoon!
Campbeltown
Brass held a very successful Pancake afternoon in the Stronvaar
Bowling club on Saturday 3rd March. The fresh pancakes,
coffees and teas brought in a big crowd and along with the
raffle, the baking, bottle and train stalls, they raised £545
for band funds.
