Campbeltown Brass must be one of very few bands that require constant rebuilding. The band is unique, in a sense, because of their location. This is an inevitable process that the band goes through year by year. They build the band to competitive standard, only to lose members leaving the area due to the need to further their education or employment. This is perhaps why Campbeltown Brass will always be a “young” band.
For a typical competition outwith Campbeltown – a well-oiled machine kicks into action: early morning start, 4-6 hours journey to their destination, play their competition pieces, hop back on the bus and another 4-6 hours journey home (not knowing whether they have won or not!).
It is to the band’s credit that despite the disadvantages of being in the middle of nowhere, they still manage to produce some amazing and competitive players, and as a band have won trophy upon trophy. For the youngsters that are now coming up the ranks, the beginners that the band continues to attract, the prospects are looking good. All this truly reflects the amount of hard work and dedication that each player, committee member, volunteers and parents have all put into the band, both past and present!
