The Centaur, Cheltenham Racecourse
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single…bus!
- Chinese/Campbeltown proverb
Not quite a thousand miles but it felt like it! Although it would have been nice if we were placed a bit higher in the results, we can be extremely proud of what we have achieved. Descending upon the National Brass Band Championships in Cheltenham, inevitably we get the same surprising and curious looks – are they in the right competition? Wow, they look young! I can’t remember how many times, spectators and players from other bands, commented that it is so good to see so many young people in the band. Full of admiration of how unphased they are by the occasion, even with the 12 hours journey the night before.
Right enough, straight after we played, you can see the younger ones of the band heading straight to the food court and yes, they eat constantly. Then it was out on the stands, chatting and mucking around, oblivious to what is around them. At the same time, I was talking to a couple of players from another band, in their 70’s and only been playing for the last four years, sharing stories and experiences of banding. Whether you are 7 or 70 – music doesn’t discriminate.
We wish to thank everyone involved, from the young to the old, from the players to the volunteers, for a great Cheltenham experience and hope we can continue to build on the progress that we have made.
